What is the InsuPad®?

The InsuPad is an innovative medical device intended to improve meal time insulin action for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients on intensive insulin therapy by stabilizing the skin temperature at the injection site. The use of the InsuPad® enables better glucose control with significantly less hypoglycemic events and significantly lower Insulin doses.

Do I need to consult a physician before starting to use the InsuPad?

 Yes.
 
The patient’s insulin therapy has to be adapted and training is needed. Therefore the patient needs to be accompanied by a physician while using the InsuPad the first time.

Who is eligible to use the InsuPad®?

The InsuPad is intended for use by type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, on multiple daily injection of short-acting mealtime insulin.

What is the minimum age required to use the InsuPad®?

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients from 12 years and older can use the InsuPad. 

Is it possible to use the InsuPad® in varying temperatures? Or during training?

InsuPad can be used in the temperature range of 0°C to 50°C, and it is also possible to wear the InsuPad continuously during training.

Is the InsuPad® suitable for use with all kinds of Insulin?

The InsuPad is designed to be used with short acting “mealtime” insulin (insulin lispro, insulin aspart, insulin glulisine, or regular human insulin).

Is it possible to shower with the InsuPad®? Is the InsuPad® waterproof?

Yes, the InsuPad is waterproof. You can also use it when you take a shower and while training or sweating.

Where do I find the serial number of my InsuPad®?

The Serial Number is a 9 digit number which appears on the bottom of the control unit next to the symbol SN .

How do I use the InsuPad®?

Please read the User Manual carefully and the Instruction for user leaflet, which comes with the InsuPad starter Kit and InsuPad Fenster Box. These documents can also be found on our web site (www.insuline-medical.com) along with a training video (www.insuline-medical.com/video). Please also consult your physician. 

Why do I need two control units in the starter kit?

 
The two control units are to allow  more flexibility or when more than 3 injections are needed per day. Also it is advisable to rotate between the units from time to time as this would ensure longer life time of the batteries inside the control units.
 
 
How to use the InsuPad®

Can the InsuPad® be transferred to another user?

The InsuPad device should not be used by more than one user.

Is it possible to re-use the Fenster, disposable injection window?

No, Fenster, disposable injection window, is intended for single day use only to insure injection site rotation.  As part of regular insulin therapy guidance injection sites should be rotated. In order to ensure the one day use, the Fenster, disposable injection window, breaks when the control unit is removed. 
 

 

Is one control unit sufficient per one day?

A fully charged control unit is sufficient for 3-4 injections per day. If you need more you should use the other control unit or recharge the control unit during the day.

How do I know that the InsuPad® is Working and/ or charged?

The Control Unit has two indicators which are used to provide information to the user. Below find all the indicators’ statuses:

Green indicator blinks for a few seconds when opening the Disposable Fenster

Warming cycle is “inactive”. Normal operation. If the Disposable Fenster is closed during this phase NO warming cycle is triggered.

Green indicator is constantly on after opening the Disposable Fenster.

The InsuPad is “active” and has to be closed within approximately 60 seconds in order to trigger the warming cycle.

Green indicator goes off AFTER closing the Disposable Fenster.

Warming cycle has been activated.  Normal operation.

Green indicator goes off BEFORE closing the Disposable Fenster

If the green indicator goes off while the Disposable Fenster is opened, NO warming cycle will be triggered after closing. In order to trigger a new warming cycle the InsuPad® has to be closed, re-opened and closed again. While the green indicator is constantly on.

When opening the Disposable Fenster BEFORE injection the control Unit RED indicator light starts blinking and then turns to green.

The Control Unit can be used for at least ONE more warming cycle.

When opening the Disposable Fenster BEFORE injection the control Unit RED indicator light starts blinking and then shuts off.

Warming cycle can not be initiated and recharging is needed .

Control Unit red indicator light starts blinking when opening the Disposable Fenster DURING the warming phase. (Note, the indicator light may seem orange when both indicators (red and green) are on at the same time).

Charge the Control Unit after completion of the warming cycle.

   

Green indicator is constantly on while the unit is in the Charger Base

Normal operation.  The unit is fully charged.

Low Battery. Charging is needed.

How do I assure longer battery life of the control unit?

Using the control units in terms, rotating between the units every few days.

What part of the body can I attach the InsuPad® to?

The InsuPad can be used on whatever body part that is convenient for you to use and that you usually use to inject your “meal time” insulin. 

Do I need to clean the skin surface before using the InsuPad®?

It is recommended to clean the injection site and make sure that the selected site is dry, to ensure good adhesion of the device to the skin, before attaching the InsuPad device to the body. Insulin injection guidelines states: "Before each injection, the hands and the injection site should be clean". 

How do I clean the InsuPad®?

The control unit can be cleaned with a wipe or damp cloth. The body part to which the InsuPad will be attached can also be cleaned with a wipe or a damp cloth. 

Where should I dispose of the Fenster, disposable injection window and control unit?

You can dispose of the Fenster, disposable injection window, in your residual waste.   
If necessary please dispose of the control unit at your nearest recycling depot.
Please consult local instruction on electronic waste.
 

 

The adhesive tape does not stick - what should I do? The InsuPad® keeps falling off, what should I do?

Please make sure that you clean the skin at the chosen InsuPad location. Wait until the skin is dry. Make sure that the unit is well attached to the skin. Press against the control unit with one finger and wrap another finger around the adhesive to ensure proper attachment to the skin. 
If the adhesive becomes loose, remove it, discard it and apply a new Fenster, disposable injection window part.
 

 

I cannot feel the warming, is the InsuPad® working?

The warming starts and stops automatically. The warming is gentle and might not even be felt. The green lights when opening and closing the InsuPad device indicate that the device is functioning. 
If you are still uncertain, remove the InsuPad from your body, initiate the warming cycle by opening and closing the device while the green indicators are constantly on, and keep one finger at the bottom side of the control unit in order to feel the warmth. 
 

How long does the warming cycle take?

The duration of one complete warming cycle is 50 minutes and the cycle stops automatically.

Is the InsuPad® warming the skin before or after injection?

The warming cycle starts after the Injection.

When should I attach the InsuPad®?

You can attach the InsuPad to your skin just before injecting your first daily mealtime insulin.
Many users tend to prefer attaching the InsuPad in the morning.

 

Can I charge the control unit before the battery runs out completely?

Yes.
 

Does the InsuPad® support injection site rotation?

InsuPad was designed together with diabetic educators. The injection area of 4*2 cm supports injection rotation for 4 injections per day. On the following day, the InsuPad should be placed on a different location of the skin.

Can the warming damage the Insulin?

 No, the warming temperature is mild and does not damage the insulin.

How will my therapy change when using the InsuPad®?

Using the InsuPad may result in a change of your therapy, such as an insulin dose reduction. You should consult your physician about using the device and the impact on your therapy.
